Over November and December 2020 professional musician Andy Starkey recreated a Home Alone parody music video while locked away in his house. He spent two full weeks and three weekends faithfully recreating some of the most memorable scenes from the early 1990’s smash hit Christmas comedy. Home Alone Parody Music Video Rockin Around The Christmas Tree Indie Cover Version
In our comedy parody music video Andy Starkey plays all of the characters in the film himself including:
- Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin)
- Harry Lime (Joe Pesci)
- Marv Merchants (Daniel Stern)
- “Old Man” Marley (Roberts Scott Blossom)
Punch The Air band leader Andy Starkey even performed all the stunts himself and thankfully came away unharmed. In the 1990’s Christmas film Home Alone, The McCallister family are getting ready to spend time together in Paris, France over the festive season. But they accidentally leave Kevin at their home in Chicago when they awake late due to a power cut. Subsequently Kevin then has to protect the house from burglars in his own unique manner. The film is an absolute Christmas classic and for many years was the highest grossing film of all time. Also starring John Heard and Catherine O’Hara and written & produced by 80’s film legend John Hughes. Furthermore it was directed by Chris Columbus who was pretty much unknown at the time. But is now a massively successful director mostly known for the Harry Potter franchise.
You’ll see all of the comically dangerous yet hilarious pranks and booby traps set by Kevin in our music video. Unquestionably our spoof video features all your favourite parts of the film including:
- Kevin enjoying thinking that he made his family disappear.
- Paint cans being thrown at the burglars from the bannister stairs.
- Tripping on toy cars and a tripwire.
- Tarantula on the face.
- Angels With Filthy Souls / Eating junk food scene.
- Booby traps.
- Door handle hand burn.
Our Home Alone Pastiche DIY music video.
Also in our Home Alone lampoon we reshot the classic scene where Kevin dances with shop mannequins/dummies attached to a rope and pulley system. All hoping to convince burglars Harry & Marv that the whole family are still at home. Remember how in the film you saw a life size cut out of basketball star Michael Jordan going by on a train track? Well, indie rock legend Liam Gallagher makes his debut film appearance in our video. Have you ever seen another band go to this time and length to reproduce a pastiche of another film? Furthermore we reshot each clip for clip, scene for scene and laid them out all in sequential order. We seriously doubt you’ll ever find a band who put in as much effort into all of our videos as we do.
While shooting the video a neighbour called the Police on Andy thinking he was up to no good trying to break into a house. It was actually very lucky that someone did as Andy had no idea how he was going to film the end scene otherwise. The Police saw the funny side of it though, posing for a selfie with Andy and asking him where his gold tooth was?
Here is our Side By Side Comparison Home Alone video.
Andy also compiled a video showing the original scenes compared to our video. How accurately did he manage to convey the fun of the scenes? This video has now been watched over 150,000 times.

VFX Reel
See the time and effort professional musician Andy Starkey put into visual effects in our homage to Home Alone. Some effects were created in Adobe Photoshop, others using Final Cut pro.
Blooper Reel
Here are some of the things that went wrong while shooting this parody. Mainly its Andy hurting himself doing all of the stunts himself.
The Song – Rockin Around The Christmas Tree
The music video features Punch The Air‘s very own indie cover version recording of the classic Brenda Lee Christmas song ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’. The original song is from the album Merry Christmas from Brenda Lee released December 1962 in the UK. Brenda’s version was actually featured in the original film of Home Alone too when Kevin dances with the mannequins. Which was of course where our Andy got the idea to cover this song and the video from. The song was written by Johnny Marks who also wrote “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “A Holly Jolly Christmas”.
Production of Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (Indie Rock Cover)
Andy spent a few weeks over November recording our indie rock version of Rockin Around The Christmas tree before sending off to his good friend Russ Hollinshead to mix and master. Andy took influences from classic indie artists such as Oasis and The Killers to create the sound and tone of this rerecording.

Lyrics for Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree at the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see every couple tries to stop
Rocking around the Christmas tree, let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we’ll have some pumpkin pie and we’ll do some caroling
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing let’s be jolly, deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree, have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily in the new old-fashioned way
You will get a sentimental feeling when you hear
Voices singing let’s be jolly, deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree at the Christmas party hop
Mistletoe hung where you can see every couple tries to stop
Rocking around the Christmas tree, have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily in the new old fashioned way
How to play Rockin Around The Christmas Tree
Our version of this Christmas song is relatively easy to play on guitar. The chords are simple enough for a novice to intermediate player to perfect. Novice’s may struggle with B minor and F sharp minor chords. So start slowly and over time build to a faster speed and you’ll soon be playing them wonderfully.
