Professional wedding band ‘Punch The Air‘ love performing in the #LoveShack as Bashall Barn call it (Although we always call it “The Love Box”) with its amazing LED lit “LOVE” sign behind us. There is plenty of space for us to perform within The Love Box as a three piece band but you might struggle if you booked a band with four or more members. Parking and loading in for us is very simple and close by so we are able to move all of our gear in with little to no disruption to guests and staff. Usually loading in our gear, setting up and sound checking at most venues can take about 90 minutes….But at our last performance at Bashall Barn we managed it in just 57 minutes as we know the layout and sound style of the venue so well now. How much will it cost to hire ‘Punch The Air’ as my Bashall Barn Wedding Band?
Prices start from £1359 for two live performances with iPad DJ services included before, in-between and afterwards until midnight. You also get PA and lighting included in the price too. We have various optional extras listed below that you can also upgrade to if you wish. We can work to whatever schedule you have for your day but we’ve always found that the following seems to work best at Bashall Barn:
6:00pm – Bashall Barn wedding band ‘Punch The Air’ arrive, set up and soundcheck (Approx 60-90 mins).
Approx 7:30pm – Your evening commences with light DJ services provided by ‘Punch The Air’.
8:15pm – Cake cutting followed by your first dance as a married couple. ‘Punch The Air’ will be waiting on stage ready to kick into our first live Indie Rock and chart pop performance.
9:00pm – DJ services / Buffet.
10:15pm – ‘Punch The Air‘ perform their second live set. (Or you can have one long set instead of two if you prefer)

Note: Did you know that any band that performs at Bashall Barn MUST use an electronic drum kit?
This is because Bashall Barn have a “Sound limiter” installed in the venue. It helps them to be able to still have live bands perform there while adhering to a strict (ish) decibel volume level. ‘Punch The Air‘ have an optional state of the art electronic drum kit for venues with sound limiters. You can be assured we are able to keep within a venues noise limits. Our wedding party band always bring our electronic drum kit along with us when performing as a Bashall Barn band and it will cost you no extra fee. Don’t worry, it sounds just as good as an acoustic drum kit and you won’t even know the difference.

What another musicians think is good promo isn’t good promo.
There are too many bands out there who simply don’t care about providing their clients with quality video and photos . Should you really be considering paying thousands of pounds for a party band whose promotional video was shot on a friends phone, all shaky, with murky quality and awful distorted audio? Photos that are blurred and out of focus again taken with camera phones? We certainly think not. This is all because its too much effort for these bands (Who always state they are “Professionals”, “The UK’s Premier this and that” yet have nothing to back up these credentials) to spend the extra time creating something of higher quality instead.
How other bands pull the wool over your eyes.
The other type of promotional video currently doing the rounds are completely over the top “Mimed to” videos. The likes of which audio and performances are completely impossible to pull of live. What you are seeing and hearing with 99% of other bands out there is studio recorded audio. Recorded then re-recorded until it is 100% correct. Then extra guitar parts will be recorded over the top and even keyboards and string sections in some cases. Ask yourself when you watch these videos “How can I hear a second guitar (keyboard/strings etc) in a three piece band”? The answer is that you shouldn’t be able to.
The band then shoot a studio video with fast moving video camera angles. You won’t see an audience member in sight anywhere. Usually these types of videos are paid for by the agencies who have exclusive rights to the band you’re watching. In tern you are paying for this video to have been produced yourself on the 20-40% markup agency fee.

3:20pm – I set off for Taunton, to perform in Somerset at a 40th Birthday Party Band bright and early in the mid afternoon. It’s a very long way away and I don’t want to be late by getting caught up in traffic allow the way of this mammoth journey from Lichfield. But long haul travel is a necessary evil for professional musicians. Classic Indie Rock party band ‘Punch The Air’ are playing in a barn on a farm for a 40th Birthday Party tonight. The client also hired our additional late night DJ services after so I doubt I’m going to be home before 4am tomorrow. Yes, thats four o’clock in the middle of the night. 40th Birthday Party Band

3:30pm – My sat nav (Apple Maps) tells me that the best way to get to the M5 is through Sutton Coldfield and then Wylde Green, Erdington and onto the M6 (Personally I would’ve thought the M42 would be quickest, but I assume it knows best……)

4:00pm – I’m still not even on the M6 yet…..Next time (and on the way back) I’ll use my own instincts.
5.00pm – I’m well into the journey on the M5 now and even though there are lots of 40 & 50mph road work speed limits the traffic is moving nicely. I listen to Radio 2, Abba Gold (Hey even indie rock dudes like us like a bit of ABBA) a bit of the Beatles and make a few phone calls to while away the motorway hours.
5:30pm – I’ve just passed Bristol and Portishead so it’s not THAT much further now until indie cover band ‘Punch The Air’ arrive.
Slightly wrong venue
6:10pm – I pull up at completely the wrong farm (And so has everyone else attending the 40th Birthday a man tells me who directs me to the correct farm)…..Again thanks Apple Maps.
6:12pm – I pull into the correct venue of the 40th Birthday party, a large ground with multiple tents, buildings and barns everywhere and I’m directed into a barn containing cows. I notice the “Farmyard” smells for just a few moments until it becomes a part of natural breathing. Tonight it seems we’re playing on the back of a trailer and I’m able to pull the van right up to the rear of it and keep it there all night. (Thank goodness they’ll be no dragging PA speakers through muddy fields). Stewart (Our session/dep drummer for the evening due to Matt being currently on holiday in Thailand) must have arrived very early as he’s already completely set up.
There are a couple of little kids hanging around who have apparently been enjoying themselves playing on Stu’s drums while he waits for me. I think this is going to be a great night for our indie rock cover band.
6.15pm – Stu and I start to pull all the gear from the van and decide where its going on and off stage. A wooden dance floor has been laid out and there are a couple of lights on the wall. There’s a couple of kegs of beer and various spirits and bottles of wine up the far corner bar. The barn is done out in true barnyard style with bales of hay making up seating areas and huge round wooden tables. Its gonna be one heck of a ho-down tonight.

6:20pm – The 40th Birthday girl introduces herself to us and we chat for a while about booking live entertainment. She’s a lovely gal.

6.25pm – James arrives and starts to unload his gear. There are multiple questions from the group of kids hanging around and a little girl calling herself “Fizzy” quickly hooks herself onto us. I worry that there is not going to be enough power sources nearby but our 25 and 50 meter power extension cables do the job nicely.
6:56pm – The initial set up of our backline is nearly complete and we’re just about ready to sound check. It’s clear from the offset that the PA is going to have to be a lot louder than usual so its a good job we’ve got 1.6Kw of power to play with. There’s a slight issue when “Phantom Powered” microphones and I have to re-check input levels again, but nothing major. I’d spent a good few hours with the PA on Friday morning tinkering with bass, gate and EQ settings and its really paid off as we sound better than ever. I can hear myself crystal clear on stage through my in ear radio monitoring system so that makes me happy and calm.

7.12pm – During soundcheck “Fizzy” asks for some Guns N Roses, so James obliges. Followed by various other classic rock requests from her.
Ahead of schedule
7.30pm – 30 minutes ahead of schedule I pop the DJ iPad software on over the PA and we get the party started way ahead of schedule. I set up the custom projector logo I created for the client. Which you can see in the below image. It features images of the passions in life. Farming, sailing, hockey and skiing. Pretty cool eh

7.34pm – Guests start to appear and I continue to set up more on stage and dance floor lighting. It’s a good job I bought EVERYTHING with me as its a huge barn and what with there being no wall behind us the light would just be getting lost otherwise. Kids dance the way only kids can dance and a little toddler dressed in red is already having the time of his life…..I hope they get to see us perform live later on.
8:10pm – I get changed into my onstage clothing and pop out to mingle with guests.
8.40pm – Its starting to get dark now and “Backstage” i.e. in the actual cow shed its getting very dark and I wonder how we’ll be able to see how to get up on stage later. But we borrow a large torch (Now on my shopping list) and we can see what we’re doing. Later on we find a floodlight…even better.
8:45pm – The toddler dressed in reds parents introduce themselves to us and tell us that “Noah” loves music and he’ll no doubt be right at the front of the stage dancing his little heart out later…..The more the merrier we say.
First live performance by 40th Birthday Party Band
9.00pm – Here goes the first set. There’s Beatles, The La’s, Wonderstuff (Dedicated to the real life cows behind us that we must be keeping awake), Amy Winehouse and more. Thats the indie rock cover band audience members catered for. The crowd are up and dancing from the off set, and so is little toddler Noah……bless him.
9.20pm – We all sing a classic Happy Birthday to the birthday girl, followed by our own full band version.
9.40pm – The client joins us onstage to sing ‘Johnny B Goode’ (unbeknown to us, but still tonnes of fun), we even change the words to her name. This is why Punch The Air are a top rated party band. We later find out that she used to play the track in a band she had when she was a teenager. Its nice to know you can still remember words to songs 25 years later eh.

9.50pm – This Charming Man closes the first set (Both sets have been tailored to suit a 40th Birthday Party). I announce over the PA (At the clients request) that it time for all the kids to go to sleep. Now so all the adults can party without them. I stick on some modern pop music and we quickly head off stage. We down a few pints of water and head out to help ourselves to the buffet. The caterers at this 40th Birthday have produced some of the best tasting treats I’ve ever eaten. The pig roast (Supplied by a different local supplier) is out of this world (Pictured).
Hog Roast
We feed goats, stroke dogs, entertain some of the remaining kids still awake. Also we chat with guests (Who try to quiz us on what’s coming up in the second set) and catch up with the birthday girl.
10.05pm – I sample a pint of the local amber ale that’s on tap and very nice it is too. The parties in full swing now and everyone’s hankering for us to go back on stage again.

40th Birthday Party Band second set commences
10.40pm – We tune up and quickly start the second live set with some light hearted punk/pop.
10.47pm – Everyone’s back on the dance floor singing and dancing along. We play a classic Pulp hit, a few 80s numbers and its time for the audience to sing the rest of the set to us. Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Kings Of Leon, we pay them all.
10.59pm – The audience are now up on tables, hay stacks and giant cable coils acting as makeshift tables. The crowd scream out for more.
11.40pm – We’re still going…..
11.45pm – We leave the stage to passionate applause and I pop a bit of Blur on, followed by Queen. It not over yet though as…..
11.53pm – We’re back on stage for a final encore. Help by The Beatles followed by a request that we don’t usually get the opportunity to perform live. ‘One Day Like This’ by Elbow. It was requested by the client to be played on the DJ playlist but why not go one better and perform it live for her 40th Birthday Party?
11.55pm – “Throw those curtains wide, one day like this a year will see me right” everyone sings with us.
Second set ends
12.05am – And the live sets are finally over and the DJ set starts up. Many members of the audience come up and shake us by the hand congratulating us on such a wonderful performance. The client comes over to thank me and I notice she doesn’t seem all the inebriated…..”I’ve not been drinking” she informs me…..Imagine that, sober on your 40th Birthday…..each to their own eh. She thanks us for a brilliant night, but its not over yet.
12.10am – The client requested a collection of songs to be performed DJ wise. I slip those on for her as we begin the laborious task of packing everything down. That we can do without disturbing PA speakers or dance floor lighting.
12.35am – We’re asked for a couple of requests by guests, so they go on too. Guitars, amps and drums are cleared away and so is a heck of lot of cabling…..I’m still always surprised how much gear we own and what it takes to get ‘Punch The Air’ its own unique thick sound. James disappears off back home and Stu very, very kindly offers to stick around. He going to help me out with the rest of the gear when the nights over.
1.00am – The 40th Birthday party band is over. We give the last of the dancers a round of applause. Stu and I start to pack away the rest of the PA and lighting. The vans very near, so this shouldn’t take too long. The client thanks me again and asks me if I want any food to eat on the way home. I take a little cheese and fresh fruit to hopefully keep me awake later.
Leaving the venue
1.15am – We finally leave the farm and start the long journey home. Having discussed with Stu a quicker way back when I reach the Midlands I’m confident I can be home before 4am.
2.30am – Making good time and listening to some great tunes. But it pains me to have to pull into a motorway service station. I need for some fuel. At least it’s a swanky new forecourt and interior at Gloucester. The cashier is nice and cheerful for this time of night.
3:40am – I’m home and 20 minutes earlier than I’d hoped. I pour myself a glass of honeyed vodka with ice and head off to bed (Come on, I deserve it). It really was a great book a 40th Birthday party band affair. The client was really lovely, it was a brilliant makeshift venue. The crowd were really up for it all night long, and we sounded better than ever. I love it when a plan comes together.
JOB DONE.

Hednesford Town FC features an excellent sized permanent wooden dance-floor. Which is carpeted around the sides helping to absorb unwanted noise and ringing from the band PA system. It has a good sized licensed bar serving draught beers and a selection of other spirits and soft drinks. Catering can be provided from a simple buffet to a four course waiter service. Audibly it is a very good room with no ringing or echo for our indie rock cover band. Thus it is very quick and easy to mix a good quality sound for our Hednesford Football Club Wedding Band. There is plenty of parking for guests and band members. Our band vehicles can be pulled up right outside the venue to load in pretty much directly into the lift. 3:15pm – It’s a 21st birthday party band tonight for Indie Rock cover band ‘Punch The Air‘ that we’re performing at. So I (Your author and professional musician Andy Starkey) load the van up with my sacred vintage bass guitars, various bits and bobs and then head to my friends house to pick up my extra LED stage lights that I let him borrow last week for a wedding he was performing at. 3.30pm – My good pal is actually in thankfully and he has the gear ready for me by his front door. So I leave my musician friends house exactly on schedule. I’m off to a great start then. Hopefully the traffic on the roads won’t be too bad today.
4.30pm – I’ve been on the road for about an hour now and luckily the roads and motorways are pretty clear apart from a 50mph section of the M40, but it’s only for about a mile so there’s no real hold up. The van is running very smoothly having just past its first MOT while in my possession (with no advisories). I’ve listened to a couple of great driving playlists and have just completed ‘Rubber Soul’ by The Beatles. I wonder to myself if there are any 21st Birthday specific songs? (I look it up when I get home…no there aren’t.)
5.15pm – I’ve reached J14 of the M25 and marvel as aeroplanes fly very low over the motorway. I hope they don’t fly too low.

Arriving at 21st Birthday Party Band
5.28pm – I arrive at the community hall we’re performing at two minutes earlier than planned (124.2 miles taking 1 hour and 58 minutes with no major speeding incidents). It’s now absolutely boiling hot outside. I check my phone and see thats its 24 degrees, so its going to be one hot and sweaty affair for a live band and guests this evening. I speak to the client (The father of the 21st birthday boy) who is happily sticking up huge blown up pictures of his lad on the walls in various places.

He buys me a pint of shandy and I start to cool down a little. We discuss times of live entertainment etc and I start to load in the PA lighting and my bass rig from the van. We’ve got a really decent sized stage (amateur dramatics stylè) so they’ll be plenty of movement from us tonight. I place the speakers and sub on the floor in front of the stage (and also the dancefloor lighting) to give us maximum stage space.
6.00pm – James arrives and I continue to set up while he brings his amp and function band guitars in.

6.15pm – My drummer arrives (Slightly late as he had to pop back home 5 minutes into his journey to pick up his drum mics…doh, drummers eh!). He starts to bring his gear inside and starts to assemble his drum kit.

6.25pm – I notice that there are various onstage and hall lighting switches hidden behind a side curtain, so give then a quick flick….most do nothing, some add a little more ambient light. This may help our live birthday band somewhat.

7.15pm – We’ve nearly finished setting up but there is no sound coming from the mixing desk into my in ear monitoring system….. yep, the leads gone kapput. It gets quickly replaced and we’re all ready to sound check. Its a very echoey room as its got a wooden floor, and no sound dampening on the walls or ceiling, but it still sounds really great. A few tweaks here and there and we’re ready just in time as the guests arrive.

7.30pm – I meet the birthday boy (His actual 21st Birthday Party Band was a few days ago in the week) and we have a quick chat about a few things. I’m surprised he’s not plastered yet. The arrival music DJ set goes on we head outside to cool down a little.
7.40pm – I head back in slightly worried that its a little too bright in the hall. So I find the bar manager who turns off most of the lights. Its now looking a lot better with our dancefloor lights doing their things. The clients customised projector logo that I designed for him (featuring his favourite bands logo) shining nice and clearly on the wall. I head back outside again and join the rest of the band.

8.35pm – We get changed into our on-stage clothing and head to the stage for a final tune up.
Time for the first live performance at this 21st Birthday Party Band
8.45pm – Live music commences with the first song of the first set underway but unfortunately James breaks a string one minute in. (Its only a top E, they always break). No one else has noticed and we continue on with the song anyway. A very quick swop over of guitars after the first song and we’re into the rest of the first set. Its fast and furious and very hot on stage and the audience are happily dancing away. The birthday boy runs screaming to the front of the hall singing his head off to each new song. There’s Beatles, Amy Winehouse, Primal Scream, Stereophonics and much more.
9.05pm – The client joins us on stage for some expert tambourine playing during ‘Jumpin Jack Flash’ and all the cameras come out. Then its straight into some Kinks, Monkees and Lynyrd Skynyrd and some Indie rock covers.
9.30pm – The first set ends to whoops and claps and we head off stage to get some much needed air outside and down a couple of pints of water each. Its still really hot outside, but at least its cooler than inside. After a few minutes the buffet arrives (Pizzas) so we tuck in to keep our energy up. The client thrusts his iPod into my hands and asks if we can play his playlist over the PA. “No problem” I tell him and disconnect our DJ gear. I pop on his favourite rock tracks for him and his friends to enjoy while eating. So far its seem to have been a great 21st birthday party band for us and the guests.

Second live performance
10.10pm – We head back on stage, to tune up just before we kick into the 2nd set. There’s songs from Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs, Pulp before we get the audience to sing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song to the client. Then we crack into The Ramones version of Happy Birthday ourselves . Followed by some 80’s, some 70’s and a decent slab of Britpop from Oasis, Blur and Reef. Everyones dancing now and although there aren’t many guests at this event they’re all dancing and singing their hearts out to us. Highlights include the whole room singing the riff to ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes back to us.
10.57pm – After 3 encores we end the set with the screaming ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ by Jet. There’s rapturous applause and the live sets are done. The client comes on stage and shakes all of our hands thanking us for a brilliant night.
The end of the night
11.00pm – The end of night DJ set goes on and we head off stage (looking like a complete sweaty mess) to catch some much deserved air outside again. Guests come up to thank us and talk about the evenings events with. We head back in and start to break down some of the gear. The client comes up and thanks me again. Saying that his son had said it was exactly what he wanted for his 21st birthday. He tells me how happy he was to have found us to hire a 21st birthday party band.

12.00am – The lights go on and we start to load the van and cars up. It doesnt take too long as packing away is MUCH quicker than setting up. A quick goodbye again to everyone and I’m back on the road again at 12.15am
1.00am – Crazy amounts of rain keep me awake on the way home, as does some excellent music by Blondie and The Clash.
2.15am – I arrive back at home (Much earlier than I thought I would do) and settle into a cold beer. Popping on an episode of ‘American Dad’ while I chill out before heading off to bed. Its been a really great 21st birthday party band and we were all happy to have been a part of it all.
