It was our second appearance at this wonderful Staffordshire venue for their bi-yearly ale festival band. Punch The Air performed at the Guildhall for Lichfield Arts many years ago back in 2013 when we first formed our professional covers band. We’ve been asked many times since to return since. Yellow by Coldplay Cover

At the end of a rather good band rehearsal indie rock wedding band ‘Punch The Air’ decided set up a few cameras to record this Yellow by Coldplay cover. The video and audio had to go on the back burner for a while as we were very busy with weddings, birthdays and corporate event parties. But eventually Andy found some time to mix it all. Everything you see and hear is  played 100% live. This audio wasn’t recorded elsewhere in a studio that the band then mimed to while filming the video, it features fully live audio. Dressed in casual clothing you will see Punch The Air (not in our normal smart wedding band clothing) performing one of the most famous Coldplay singles. Yellow by Coldplay was recorded in March 2020 at Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, South Wales. It was released as a single in June 2020 and was taken from their debut album Parachutes. It reached number 4 in the UK singles chart and even went to number 1 in Iceland.

The original music video features lead singer Chris Martin walking down the sandy beach of Studland Bay in Dorset, UK. The video is one single take and the audio was sped up for Chris Martin to mime along too so that they could slow it back down later. This then gave a slow motion effect to the video. The single sleeve cover to Yellow by Coldplay features a silhouette of a dandelion in front of the sun on an orange/yellow background.

Here is how doing the speed ups/low down effect would look like if we added the live audio over the top of us miming along. Pretty interesting eh?

What happens when you need to book a cover band exactly? That’s a pretty good question. A cover band (Or covers band – Plural) is a group of musicians that perform live music by other artists. A live covers band will NOT perform songs written by themselves.  Said band will perform music of a specific genre (in our case Indie Rock) or from a specific decade. A cover band will not generally dress up to look like the bands they are reproducing the music by. (‘Punch The Air‘ will perform for you in our own smart uniform though). This is different to a tribute band who will generally perform live music by one specific artist and dress up to look like the band as well. How it all happened

We had no idea that Ms Langhorne was exhibiting at the same wedding fair as Punch The Air. As she was across the other side of the field in a tipi tent. Towards the end of the event she wondered over to our little staged area. There, she casually watched us for a few songs singing a dancing along to our live indie repertoire. We didn’t actually know who she was at all. But Andy thought it would be fun to ask her up on stage with us anyway even though he didn’t know if she could sing in tune or not. Eventually we managed to coerce her onto the stage not knowing anything about her musical talents. Watch Pippa Langhorne on stage with us.

Indie Rock Cover Band Shotgun by George Ezra

Even though indie rock cover music is our main forte and style for ‘Punch The Air‘ we also perform a number of chart hits from present back through the decades. A massive crowd pleaser is Shotgun by George Ezra. Taken from the number one selling album ‘Staying at Tamara’s’. We’ve had a slight little play around with the song and made it our very own. Having given it a slight indie rock cover twist and given guests the opportunity to sing it back to us. Everyone enjoys this brilliant pop tune, all ages old to young as you will see in the George Ezra cover song live video below. Did you know that this song is actually about the country (and continent) Australia (Homegrown alligator…South of the equator…Bikini bottoms, lager tops). It makes sense, it must be about Australia right? Singalong with us now “I’ll be riding shotgun, underneath the hot sun, feeling like a someone”. What a tune right?

 

We also use to perform the hit single Budapest by George Ezra (Nothing to do with the city in Hungary apparently) too from the massively successful Did ‘You Hear The Rain?’ album.
